Salthill, final home game of the season 2010 !

City's final home game of the season took place last night against Salthill Devon  .
It was a game where City had most of the ball, but  a solid Salthill side probably deserved the result on merit.
City  came close to scoring after 7 mins when Graham Cummins had  a  shot blocked off the line, Davin O'Neil missed but only just. George O Callaghan  was full of brilliance; playing just in front of the back four, his creative spark meant the home team were dominating in midfield and he continuously sought out a killer pass to play his teammates in.
But for all City's dominance, they were dealt a cruel blow when the City defence failed to clear a Cian McBrien’ cross from the right wing and Robbie Porter pounced from 12 yards out to slice home the ball  into the bottom corner of the net.
After this and as the game headed into the 2nd half, City were still on top in the possession stakes but could'nt find a route to goal . However, City managed to get an equaliser on  66 mins after he carefully slotted the ball low into the net from ten yards out.
It looked more likely that City would score a winner, but with 8 mins left Daryl Horgan flew into the box and he was dragged down by Gavin Kavanagh just inside the area  referee John Grimes immediately pointed to the spot and Cian  McBrien stepped  up to score the spotkick and secure 3 pts for the Galway men.
City next play Wexford Youths in Ferrycarraig Park next Saturday (8pm) , with everyone now starting to plan for next year .

Finn Harps , 15th October !

Unfortunatly, your's truly could'nt last night's game, but after last night's result we offically will be playing first division football again next season. The main thing to come out of 2010 from Cork City perspective is that we have a team to support in Cork which is great considering all the rubbish in the high court over the last year or 2 with Tommy No Bobs Coughlan . We'll hopefully only improve from here and heres hoping that this time next season we'll be promoted to the premier divison  .

Offical Match report.

A solitary first-half strike from Kevin McHugh helped Finn Harps to put the final nail in Cork City’s promotion seeking casket with a well-earned first win in seven for the Donegal side at Finn Park on Friday night.

With eight points now separating Cork from third place Waterford, who won away at Longford, and with just two games remaining, the Munster side’s impressive end-of-season surge has come up just short.

Harps, meanwhile, look a good bet on ending the season with an unbeaten home record in the league that stretches back as far as the middle of May. After next week’s meeting with Derry City in the Brandywell, Harps welcome fellow strugglers Mervue United to Ballybofey, hoping to bring the season down on the back of an eleven-game unbeaten run in the league.

Both sides had selection difficulties coming into the game with the hosts having to cope without Tommy Bonner, Tony Shields and Gary Whoriskey, while the Leesider’s travelled north minus the services of eight players – George O’Callaghan, Eoghan Lougheed, Neal Horgan, Billy Woods, Stephen Mulcahy, Greg O’Halloran, Cathal Lordan and Shane Barrett.

The absentees weren’t so noticeable early on, but as the game progressed it was clear that it was Harps who were by far the more galvanised. In contrast, Cork appeared a side bandaged up without repair, and how could it be any different with so many alterations. Neither side really bossed the opening half, but it was Harps who appeared much more likely to score with Cork more often than not restricted to long range attempts.

Harps, it must be said, looked as balanced a side as they have in some time, with the more orthodox 4-4-2 formation seemingly fitting like the proverbial glove. With Mark Forker and Michael Funston tenacious and industrious in the engine room and Stephen McLaughlin and Marc Brolly occupying the wide berths with great invention, the Donegal side possessed lovely equilibrium throughout.

McLaughlin, intent on tormenting Cork skipper Cillian Lordan all night, always looked a threat when cutting in off the right touchline before having a pop at goal. The winger, incidentally, opened the game up with what would become his trademark signature for the night, but his first effort flew narrowly over the ‘bar.

Cork did threaten sparsely in the opening stages with Graham Cummins shooting straight at Gavin Cullen from twenty yards while Davin O’Neill did the same but from a much shorter distance.

Harps had just started to exert their dominance on the game when the deadlock was broken on twenty-three minutes. A patient build-up culminated in a lovely through-ball from Mark Forker for right-back James Doherty to gallop on to. And after luring Cork ‘keeper Mark McNulty from his line, the defender, unselfishly, dragged square for Kevin McHugh to fire home his fourteenth goal of the campaign.

The hosts would go in at the break with a deserved and well-earned lead, but also well in the knowledge that a library worth of mistakes had cost them dear already this season. Luckily, their resistance wasn’t tested that much, though Cork were a much more together outfit after the restart with Cummins dragging a shot wide early on and Gearoid Morrissey hammering off-target from twenty-five yards.

Harps, who more or less just had to consolidate their standing in the second half, didn’t have that many chances to extend their lead, however Marc Brolly almost caught McNulty off his line, when the ‘keeper fluffed a clearance. At the other end, Gavin Cullen did brilliant to deny Graham Cummins from drawing level when the striker took advantage of a slip from Keith Cowan only to be thwarted at point-blank range by the Harps ‘keeper.

Harps, though, ended the game in control and were unlucky not to have got a second when Gary Merritt crossed for Stephen McLaughlin at the back-post, who drilled just past the far post.

Finn Harps: Gavin Cullen; James Doherty, Packie Mailey, Keith Cowan, Matthew Crossan; Stephen McLaughlin, Michael Funston, Mark Forker, Marc Brolly; Davitt Walsh, Kevin McHugh.
Subs: Gary Merritt (Brolly, 74 mins), Oisin McMenamin (Walsh, 78 mins).

Cork City: Mark McNulty; Ian Turner, Gavin Kavanagh, Kalen Spillane, Cillian Lordan; Davin O’Neill, Shane Duggan, Gearoid Morrissey, Paul Deasy; Graham Cummins, Garrett Cambridge.
Subs: Simon Holland (Deasy, 46 mins), Rory Morrissey (Holland, 64 mins), Alan Sheahan (Duggan, 75 mins).

Monaghan , 9th October .

City won 1-0 yesterday , thanks to another goal from that man Graham Cummins.
It was the first time we beat Monaghan this season and a win was overdue. Hopefully Tommy Dunne's side
will end the season on a high and win the remaining 3 games.
Next week is a trip to Ballybofey to face Finn Harps on Friday night (7:45 pm)

Cork City finally broke their Monaghan United hoodoo at Turner’s Cross this afternoon, with a solitary goal separating the sides for the fourth time this season, while also slowing Mons’ promotion hopes down with three games to play.

Leading into this game, Monaghan were the only side that Cork had not taken points from and it was finally about time that the home side finally got the better of a United side which had beaten them by a single goal on three previous occasions since April.

As always, it was Cork’s prodigal mastermind Graham Cummins that produced the goods when he produced the decisive goal just before the hour mark.

Cummins was unusually quiet during the first half for City, surprising considering there were scouts from cross-channel clubs especially here to watch the league’s top marksman, and generally when the Douglas-man isn’t getting on the ball, Cork falter like a ’88 Toyota Hiace climbing up Patrick’s Hill.

Still, he came to live in the second half and could have actually had a hat-trick only for some good goalkeeping by Gabriel Sava.

With both sides lining up in negative 4-5-1 formations, chances were as rare as a sunny October afternoon on Leeside. It was to be expected however, as Mick Cooke’s Monaghan clearly stated they would be satisfied with a draw, while Cork had little to play for after their defeat to Shelbourne eight days previous quenched their play-off ambitions.

Nonetheless, the home team were still able to grind out a convincing win which severely dented Mons’ hopes of automatic promotion despite there being little else to talk about other than the goal over the 90 minutes.

In a drab opening half, Davin O’Neill headed miles wide on 6 minutes for Cork, while at the other goalmouth Cathal O’Connor had a half-chance easily blocked down 60 seconds later with clear-cut opportunities proving hard to come by.

Cork were probably just shading the game in terms of possession and midfielder O’Neill drilled a low effort across goal in the 15th minute after finding himself in loads of space 15 yards out from Sava’s net.

Monaghan’s star attacker Philly Hughes has already shown his worth at Turner’s Cross this year and shooting into the same goal that he scored in the last time the sides met, a 1-0 win for Mons in the FAI Cup, he drilled a speculative free-kick just wide of Mark McNulty’s right hand post 20 minutes in.

At times the Cork back-line has been like a comedy reel of errors this season and another slide was almost added to the show when Mark McNulty attempted to clear, but the ball struck off Sean Brennan’s back before, luckily for the home team, spinning narrowly wide of the goal.

Half-time came and went with little else to note and as the second half kicked off there was a disconcerting silence around the ground with Monaghan controlling the early passages of play.

Still, the Ulstermen looked like they would gladly run back up north with a point, which would temporarily draw them level with Derry at the summit for a couple of hours at least.

The first decent chance after the break did fall to Mons as Brennan curled a gentle effort just over the bar in the 52nd minute, though they soon watched themselves fall behind.

While Cummins may have been anonymous up until the 58th minute he finally showed his killer instinct by latching onto O’Neill’s delightfully paced pass and driving the ball carefully past Sava, high into the net out of the ‘keepers reach.

The striker was bang on form after that strike and he forced Sava into a remarkable finger-tip save from ten yards out in the 65th minute when Cummins’ right-footed piledriver looked to be dipping under the bar only for Mons’ impressive stopper to get the slightest of touches to divert the ball over his bar.

Cork were always comfortable after taking the lead and Billy Woods saw his strike ricochet wide of the mark with 11 minutes to play. When Cooke withdrew an overall ineffective Hughes and brought on Darragh Hanaphy, it signalled the last throw of the dice for the away side but Cummins went close to doubling the lead on 83 minutes only to be denied by another Sava save.
