Underage round up, 27th September

This week was an unfortunate one for City's u20s as they went out of the u20 league after a 1-0 defeat away to Tralee Dynamos .
Knowing that a win would have been enough to see City qualify into the knockout stages from pool 4, the rebel army started brighly with Simon Holland and Kieran Kenneally troubling the  Tralee goal before  Willie Heffernan's shot hit the post after 18 mins.  City dominated possession in the first 45 mins but failed to turn that into goal chances .
On 65 mins , City went a goal down when Ian O'Sullivan was beaten in the City goal by Jason Higgins header .
City  mainly through the efforts of Simon Holland attempted to get an equaliser but sadly it never came. Results eslewhere in the group meant that Mervue United and Salthill Devon qualified for the knockout stages of the u20 league from  pool 4.

City team:
Ian O'Sullivan, Jason Higgins, Gary Buckley, Alan Sheehan(Danny Morrissey 64 mins) , Dalian Roche, Willie Heffernan, Wayne  Burton(Brendan Cullan 54 mins) , Keith O' Sullivan, Simon Holland, Kieran Kenneally, Eoin Mc Greevey  .

Elsewhere, the youth side we in action along with the first team on Friday night and  they played our a great 6-1 win over Castleview .  City's scorers were Des Mallon(2)  , Jason Higgins(penalty) , Eoin Mc Greevey, Cian O' Connor and Ian Mc Conville .
Next up for    Paul Bowdren's side is cup action as City play in the FAI youth cup with a home tie against Douglas Hall  .

City's u17s had  a brilliant 7-2 win away to Temple United.
Danny Morrissey hit a hat trick for Stephen Birmingham's side.    Josh Kra, Roy Collins, Shane Long and Mark Quinn got the other goals .
Next for them is a home game with Carrigaline .

City 1-0 Longford , 24th September

What a play Graham Cummins has been for City this season. Last night the First division's top goalscorer got his 17th goal of the season as City kept their promotion charge going with  a 1-0 win over Longford Town in Turners Cross last night.   Cummins's goal  was typical of  a striker in good cofidance, after being released down the left wing by Gareth Cambridge, Cummins showed great skill to turn Longford defender Phillp Byrne and score from a tight angle to put City in front after 10 mins   .
Then just a few minutes later, Mark Mc Nulty produced a brilliant penalty save , which could be vital come the end of the season . After being knocked over in the box by Greg O'Halloran, Longford's Lee Roche picked himself up to take the penalty but Nults dived to the right and with a great save kept City in front. Before the half was done, Mc Nulty produced another great save, he is improved as the season hos gone on. On 23 mins, Cummins missed a great oppertunity as he  missed from 6 yards out, but we will leave him off with that one given his form in front of goal this season.  City looked comfertable as half time arrived.
The 2nd half saw Longford start brightly, but City  kept them out as neither side really created enough room to get a shot away as the 2nd half  progressed    .
Unfortunatly for Longford, Lee Roche  was stretchered off as he went down in the area . He had strapping on his leg and he looked in some pain so lets hope he is back on the pitch as soon as possible.  Right at the end George O'Callaghan was also stretchered off  with what is believed to be a knee injury. He walked out of the ground  but looks likely to miss the Shelborne game next week.
City picked up a well earned 3 pts to pick up out 8th win from the last 9 games.  We are the form team at the minute and just 5 pts of Waterford in 3rd place. So if we can keep winning then we have a good chance of making the playoffs.
To say next week's game away to Shels is  massive  is clearly an understatement.       It will be probably our biggest game of the season and it's another must win to keep out season alive.  We are overdue a win over Shels and beating them in Tolka would make victory all the sweeter.
Check back here this time next week when I will keep you posted on the events in Tolka Park.

Gearóid Morrissey signs new contract !

Cork City have just announced that Gearóid Morrissey has signed a new contract with the club.

City boss Tommy Dunne was selighted with the Morrissey renewing his contract and had this to say: “I am very pleased that Gearóid has signed a new contract. When he signed in March, I said that I wanted talented local players like Gearóid representing the club, and I feel that he has a lot to offer. Gearóid is physically strong for his age and possesses very good technical ability also, and I believe he has the potential to be a very important player for the club.”

The 18 year-old joined the club at the beginning of the season following a spell with Blackburn Rovers, but was sidelined for a period with a back injury picked up while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland Under 19 squad, but Dunne believes that the midfielder is now ready to show his ability:

“Gearóid was very unfortunate to suffer an injury which dragged on and prevented him from playing. He has been working very hard to regain his fitness, and he is now not far off being fully fit. I was very impressed with his performance in Limerick last week, and believe he is now ready to compete for a regular place in the team.”

Morrissey, who began his career with Ringmahon Rangers, told CorkCityFC.net: “I’m pleased to have signed a new contract. It has been frustrating for me to have missed so many games through injury, but I am hoping to get a run in the team now and put that behind me. We’ve got a good squad here and I am confident about the future at the club."

Underage round up, 20th September

Yesterday afternoon, Cork City's u20 side  suffered their 2nd defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Salthill Devon in Drom.
Salthill opened the scoring after 36 mins when the ball fell to Cian Fadden at the back post and while his first effort was a complete mis-kick he was allowed the time to fire the ball into the back of the net.
City were very close to an equaliser after 60 mins after a corner kick fell to Ben Twomey and his volley smashed off the cross bar and appeared to cross the line before being scrambled clear  . With 15 mins left, Salthill doubled their lead thanks to  Salthill’s star player Daryl Horgan who picked his was through the City defence before crossing for Brian O’Grady who was allowed time to control and shot past Price in the City goal.
Wille Heffernan rifled home a shot to give City some late hope to salvage something from the game, but it was too late  as Salthill hung on for the 3 points.
With  just one more game remaining, City need to win in order to claim a place in the quarter finals.

That game takes place next Saturday against Tralee Dynamos in Bishopstown.

Eslewhere, City's youth team played  Kilreen Celtic in Bishopstown on Saturday, with City unfortunatly on the wrong  end of a 1-0 scoreline.   Kilreen were a very well organised and physical side and that proved the difference on the day. Des Mallon  from the u17's was given 45 mins for the youth side so fairplay to him for making the step up.   This Saturday coming, City make the trip to O'Sullivan Park to take on Castleview( 3 pm)
* There was no game for the u17's this week due to the Cork footballers playing the all ireland final(many congrats to them aswell for ending our 20 year wait for Sam)
Next up for the u17s is a game with Temple United in Temple Park on Sunday next( 3pm)

Limerick Away, 17th September

Jackman Park was the destination for the Rebel Army yesterday as Cork City faced Limerick .
Never come late to a City match at the moment as that seems to be when City play all their best football at the moment. Just like the week privious,City  did enough to earn 3 pts within the first 15 mins .  Last Night we were 3 up after 12 mins,  the first came when Graham Cummins got on the end of a great Shane Barrett cross to put us ahead. The 2nd came on 11 mins when Davin O'Neil strolled in from the wing through the Limerick backline before slotting past Dave Ryan in the Limerick goal and the 3rd came on 13 mins when O'Neil   volleyed home into the bottom corner .
After being shocked by how the game had Started, Limerick began to try and find a way back into the game but not really threatening City in the process .  Limerick's John Tierney was lively as always and his paced caused the City defence trouble but with no support up front he could not turn provider for a  Limerick goal .
City soaked up any Limerick attack and passed around comfortably to see out the remainder of the half.     In the 2nd half,
Stephen O’Flynn came close for the home side, his over ambitious volley from all of forty yards nearly caught out McNulty, but the Cork stopper prevented the goal.  Just as City thought they had seen the game out with a clean sheet, Limerick were awarded a free kick which Bobby Ryan put away into the bottom corner.

City after that ran out comfortable winners after a drab affair. We now lie only a point behind Limerick, and given the form we are in we still have a chance of the playoffs.   I hope  that City  if they cannot make it this year we can end the season on a high and hopefully take this good form into next season with some added confidance aswell.   To think after the way things were at pre season, it's fantastic to think that we are even in with a chance of the playoffs. Credit must go to FORAS and their Board of Managment who do some magnificent work putting loads of time in to ensure a stable and thriving Cork club in the LOI  .
If anything it keeps our season interesting and hopefully people will come out in numbers to Turners Cross, starting with Longford next week.

City link up with Maher's Sports !

Cork City Football Club will be returning to the city centre, thanks to a new partnership with Maher Sports.
To be known as “preferred retail partners” Maher Sports will be offering the full Cork City FC replica, training and leisurewear range through their flagship Oliver Plunkett Street store, as well match tickets, as part of the new arrangement.
The hugely popular store, also accessible from Maylor Street, has taken delivery of all items including the red away jersey which is proving a sought after item ahead of this Sunday’s All Ireland final.
City’s General Manager, Kevin Mullen, said: “Maher Sports have offered us a valuable presence in their flagship store which will give us a tremendous opportunity to put ourselves back in the minds of the passing Cork public in addition to the extra retail revenue that this fantastic partnership should generate.”
“I hope this proves to be just the beginning of a prosperous long-term partnership and thank all at Maher Sports for their kindness and support in assisting us.”
Commenting on the link up, Martin Mullane of Maher Sports said: “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to work with Cork City and their supporters.  After what had been a turbulent 12 months we hope the return to the city centre will help to advance the club’s profile with the Cork public.
When you’re next in town, please be sure to visit the Oliver Plunkett Street store, or Maher’s other outlets at North Main Street, Penrose Wharf and Parnell Place.  You can also visit them on line at mahersports.ie.

Priview of Limerick game!

On Friday night, Cork City make the fairly short trip up the road to face Limerick in what is a promotion chasing munster derby .  A win for City here would put us just a point behind Limerick in the league table and should the likes of Shels and Waterford slip up over the coming weeks, then a win in Jackman Park would be a massive 3pts for Tommy Dunne's men .
City can go into this one with a sense of optimisim given that they won in Limerick earlier in the season  with  3-1  being the final score. A brace from Graham Cummins and a Davin O Neil strike gace City the 3pts on the day.  Another reason to be up beat if you are a City fan   is that City have only lost 1 game on the road this season.
Shane Duggan will unfortunatly miss out due to the harsh red card he got in the win over Mervue, and so for the 2nd time this season he won't be able to play against his hometown club.
My predicion for this one is a 3-1  City win once again , with Cummins, Woods and George O'Callaghan getting the goals.

Check this blog over the weekend/early next week as I will report on how this game went.

Graham Cummins get international call up !

City forward Graham Cummins was today selected for the u23 Irish squad. It is a well deserving achievement fior Cummins, who has proven his abilty for get this call up all season with 15 league goals and 17 in all competitions.

From Cork City fc's website :

Republic of Ireland Under-23 manager Paul Doolin today named Cork City striker Graham Cummins in his 18-man squad for the International Challenge Trophy match against Estonia later this month.
Ireland travel to Estonia for the final group match of the campaign knowing that they must defeat their hosts in order to be in with a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. Ireland narrowly lost their opening match of the tournament, going down 2-1 to England.
Commenting on the call-up, City boss Tommy Dunne told CorkCityFC.net: “This is a fitting reward for Graham. He has been in very impressive form for us all season and the fact that he has scored so many goals has been very important to us, as has his excellent work-rate. It is no surprise to me that his performances over the course of the season have attracted interest from clubs both here in the Airtricity League and cross-channel, and I am delighted that he chose to commit his future to the club a number of weeks ago.”
Cummins, who is the Airtricity League First Division’s top scorer with 15 league goals, said: “I’m delighted to have been called up to the squad. This is the first time I have been called up to represent my country, and it’s an honour to have been given this opportunity.”

Underage round up , 12th September

This week City's youth team played twice in the space of 3 days.  They first played down in St Colman's park against Cobh Ramblers on Wednesday last. It finished with City getting a 2-0 win, Ciaran Mc Carthy with a cracking volly and Jason Higgans with a well taken penalty gave City the 3 points.
Then out in Bishopstown on Saturday, City had to come from 2 goals down to get a 2-2 draw with College Corinthians.  Again Ciaran Mc Carthy and Jason Higgans were on the scoresheet for the Rebel Army.
Elsewhere the u17's today had a commanding 5-0 victory over Riverstown.
In the upcoming week, there is a quite week instore due to the Cork footballers participation in the All Ireland final.  The only action for the underage sides is for City's youth team as they take on Kilreen Celtic next Saturday in Bishopstown (3pm)  .
Finally,
The U20's lost 3-1 away to Mervue United on Sunday .   Willie Heffernan had given City the perfect start when he scored the opening goal after 7 mins, but City created very few chances after that .
Mervue broke with Mike Collins forcing his way between Jason Higgins and Eamon Fitzgerald before firing past Sean Barron to make it 1-1  .
City found themselves behing as the first half entered injury time with David Smyth’s deep cross finding Enda Curran who rose above the defence to head the ball beyond Barron’s reach.
With time almost up Barry McEntee sealed the victory when his 25 yard effort was touched onto the post by Barron but the ball bounced along the goal line and ended up in the back of the net to earn Mervue a measure of revenge for the 5-0 defeat they suffered in Bishopstown earlier this year.City remain on top of the Pool 4 table and with two matches remaining qualification for the knock-out phase is still in their own hands.

Mervue, 10th September !

Last night, Mervue United were the visitors to Turners Cross . Everybody in the ground could hardly believe what was happening in front on their eyes when City went 2-0 within the first 7 mins of the match .  It was that man, "Super" Graham Cummins who scored yet again for City last night to put the rebel army in front as he g got on the end of a Gareth Cambridge cross to finish nicely past Mervue keeper  Ger Hanley with 4 minutes of the game played. Then in the 7th minute Cummins turned provider as he flicked on a Shane Duggan cross and Gavin Kavenagh was there to bury the ball into the back of the net and score his first City goal in the process.  For the remainder of the first half, it seemed only a metter of when the 3rd would come as City seemed to create  chance after chance for the remainder of the half .

First Cummins headed over after a great delivery from Ian Turner, and Cambridge was denied by the upright after rounding Hanley but could only strike the post from a tight angle.
Hanley was by far Mervue’s standout performer last night. Cambridge’s clever back-heel put Duggan through on goal, but the Mervue stopper was on hand to pull off a spectacular double save  before half time.
If the first half was an exciting one, the 2nd half was almost the complete opposite.  One talking point though was the pretty contraversial Shane Duggan sending off after he was blatently brough down in the box, the referee Peter Sutton booked Duggan for diving . I don't know what it is but the standered of LOI refereeing is quite shocking, I could be hear all day talking about this so we'll leave that topic for another day.
But in what was a pretty eventless second half, Davin O'Neil probably came the closest to scoring  for City.
Despite Barry McEntee  getting a goal back for Mervue, City held out for the 3 points.
City now lie just 4 points off the playoff positions due to results elsewhere in the league.  Next week's game with Limerick now becomes a massive one for our outside playoff chances, a win in Jackman Park would put City within just 1 pt of the Shannonsiders.

Tonight's Other Result's:

Derry 2-2 Athlone

Finn Harps 1-1 Limerick

Wexford 1-4 Monaghan

Offical Match Report :

Cork City made it nine points out of nine against Mervue United after a comfortable 2-1 victory at Turner’s Cross.
Manager Tommy Dunne made one change from last week’s win over Athlone. Davin O’Neill dropped to the bench and he was replaced by George O’Callaghan.
Wearing red at home for the first time in years, supporters were treated to a goal-fest in the opening ten minutes. After two minutes, City took the lead. Gareth Cambridge made space for himself down the right after a burst of pace left the Mervue defence helpless. He crosses perfectly for Graham Cummins who made no mistake and volleyed home past Hanley.
Moments later Gavin Kavanagh scored his first goal for the club. Cillian Lordan crossed from the left, Cummins flick on fell to Kavanagh and he fired home from close range. City dominated the first half, and Shane Duggan could have scored a third goal but his volley flew narrowly wide of the post.
More chances arrived for the Leesiders. First Cummins headed over after a great delivery from Ian Turner, and Cambridge was denied by the upright after rounding Hanley but could only strike the post from a tight angle.
Hanley was by far Mervue’s star in the opening forty-five. Cambridge’s clever back-heel put Duggan through on goal, but the Mervue stopper was on hand to pull off a spectacular double save.
The home team looked dangerous again after the restart, Cambridge curling an effort straight at Hanley from the edge of the box. Just before the hour mark, City were forced out of the comfort zone when Shane Duggan saw red for a second booking for simulation.
Dunne promptly changed the system and brought in Gearóid Morrissey and Davin O’Neill, but Mervue were able to claw one back  through Barry McEntee.
Davin O’Neill proved a threat down the other end, the substitute had two efforts on goal after excellent counter-attacking play. Again Hanley denied City stretching their lead. The referee blew the whistle as the rain poured down in injury time, giving City all three points.
Cork City
Starting Line-Up: McNulty, Turner, O’Halloran, Kavanagh, Horgan, O’Callaghan, Lordan, Duggan, Barrett, Cambridge, Cummins.

Priview of Mervue game!

Alright everybody !
Tomorrow night City face Mervue United in Turners Cross with kick off at 7:45 pm.
City will be hopeing for 3 points as they look to try and keep their outside hopes of a playoff spot alive .
Mark Mc Nulty said in an interview to be published in Cross eye, the offical matchnight programme that Tommy Dunne's men were hopeing for 9 wins from the last 9 games which started last weekend up in Athlone.

From my own point of view, I  hope that City play some more attacking football both  tomorrow night and for the rest of the season. Lets hope we can get lots of goals that will draw more people to come back to the Cross . We have some decent players in the squad right now and hopefully   the bulk of them will stay for next season as it's then when I feel we will have a real crack at promotion, which hopefully start with a confidance boosting end to this season .

On another note, credit to City for deciding to  play in their red away kit tomorrow night
in support of the Cork Gaelic Footballers who take on Down in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final the following weekend.  Great to see City supporting other codes of sport in Cork, now lets hope they will support us.

My prediction for tomorrow nights game is a 3-0 City win   .  Cummins brace and Georgie to open his account .

Please check in with the blog over the weekend as I will be writing my report from tomorrow's game .

From the offical website :

Cork City welcome Mervue United to Turner’s Cross this Friday evening in the hope of collecting another three points in their push towards a play-off spot.
Manager Tommy Dunne has a few niggling injuries to worry about including Greg O’Halloran, who is the Dubliner’s biggest concern ahead of the fixture. The defender has been carrying an ankle knock for a number of weeks but is expected to be fit.
Billy Woods, meanwhile, returned to training this week after missing the game against Athlone while George O’Callaghan has shaken off a hamstring problem.
“When we play any team at home we are always looking for three points,” Dunne insisted to CorkCityFC.net. “While we have beaten Mervue twice so far this year, they have both been tough enough games. They took the lead against us up in Galway and they are well capable of scoring goals.
“They had a bad defeat last week (losing 5-2 to Wexford Youths) and you always expect a knock-on effect from a team that gets a bit of hammering. The main priority for us is that we start the game well. If can get an early goal, it would be great but we generally just want to perform the way we have been doing over the last few weeks. If we do that, the game should look after itself.”
With just eight games remaining, every point is vital and Dunne knows that results at home will be key for the Rebel Army.
“There hasn’t been a single team in this league that we haven’t been able to create chances against. During the Monaghan and Waterford games, we had plenty of opportunities to get something and in the Waterford game in particular, we probably had more chances than they did on the night. It’s something we’re still trying to get right but we’re not far off.
“We’ve got to pick up our home form. Away from Turner’s Cross we have been extremely good – six wins, six draws and one defeat – whereas at home, we’ve been beaten six times in the league. Our home form has to be better going forward because if it was anything like our away form, we’d be talking about pushing Derry City for the top promotion spot now.
“We’ve got to look after ourselves first – that’s the bottom line. We can’t be too worried about what other teams are doing because you’ll lose sight of your own side of things then.”

Underage round up , 6th September

In what will be a weekly feature, I will be updating you on the fortunes of  City's underage sides over the coming season .
Cork City's under 17 side played in the league cup on Friday night against Macroom  out in Bishopstown and they won by the ridiculous  scoreline of  11-0, in a game where City just had way too much for their mid cork opponants.     On Sunday, City lost 1-0 to Wilton in the same competition .
Cork City's Youth team sealed their place in the semi finals of the league cup with  an 8-0 victory away to Rockmount . Brendan Cullan continued his great goalscoring form with 4 goals , Ben Twomey scored twice with Ciaran Mc Carthy and  Des Mallon also on target.
Yesterday(Sunday), City's under 20 team maintained their place at the top of the U20's league group 4 with a 3-1 win over Limerick in Annacotty .However  City first went a goal down when Limerick scored through Kevin Barry. But City took just a minute to get back on level terms with Kieran Kenneally scoring his 7th goal of the season from a penalty . City took the lead on 70 mins as Kenneally's cross fell to Rory Morrissey and he fired home from 10 yards. Rob Waters got City's thrid as he got on the end of a Kenneally cross to seal the 3 points for City .
This coming week , the u20 side play on Sunday away to Mervue( kick off 2pm) .Cork  City's youth team face 2 games this week  as their league kicks off. They travel to take on Cobh Ramblers in St Colman's Park Wednesday(kick off 7p m) and then host College Corinthians out in Bishopstown on Saturday  (kick off 3pm)   . Finally the u17's begin the league when play Riverstown on Sunday in Bishopstown ( 3pm)
Check out the blog next week to find out how City's underage teams get on .

Athlone, Saturday 4th of September !

Yesterday afternoon I made the trip to the midlands to see my beloved Cork City play as they took on Athlone Town . The supporters bus left Patrick's quay at about 1:30 pm .  The bus trip was quite enjoyable I must say and a good percentage of the 15 or so on the bus joined in a few City chants to get out vocal chords warmed up for the match . A certain fan who had his 18th the night before was hopeing  for the best possible birthday present in 3 City points(Flinter)  .
After a trip to the pub where a few City fans played a few games of Pool  while enjoying their pints, we then headed into the ground. The Athlone Town Stadium has a decent setup it has to be said, with a nice enough club  shop where hot food and refeshments were also  served, given the shocking weather conditions in the midlands it also proved to be a shelter from the heavy rain which was about. Athlone have one stand, but it's a very impressive one. It was such a shame only 150 people turned up though , with about 40 of these from Cork  as it would look fantastic if it were full.
As for the game itself,  City   pretty much were in control for the full 90 mins .  Shane Duggan had a great game overall and it was he who got City's only  goal of the game when    he dribbled his way into the box and hit the ball under Michael Schlingermann and into the net.   Half  time City were 1-0  in a half were City had the bulk of the chances. The 2nd half City wasted more chances as Cambridge and O'Neil  should have put City 2-0 up .  Athlone's Brian Mc Carthy nearly did the hard work for us, when  he put his foot out in the Athlone box and forced Schlingermann into a decent save.  Things got worse for Mc Carthy though as he was showen red by referee Jim Mc Kell for a 2nd yellow card.  Cummins and Cambridge after this forced Schlingermann into 2 more saves and City fans were thinking about weather or not we would regret these chances.   Athlone's recent new addition Declan " Fabio" O 'Brian tested Mc Nulty in the City goal but towards the end City picked up the pace and even though more chances were wasted, we hung on the the 3 points. Final score Athlone 0-1 City
It was a came we could have won 4 or 5 nil on another day, but 1 or 5 it all counts the same at the end of the day. The trip home saw some City fans starting up another sing -song and some also share their European Oddessy experiences,  hopefully those days will come again sooner rather than later .
I eventually arrived home about 1:30 am, 12 hours exactlly  since I departed for Athlone. City lie in 6th place, seven points off the playoff positions . Maybe it's too much of an ask for City to get there this season, but with the great progress this club is making under FORAS hopefully next season promotion can be a real possibility .

Offical match report : from extratime.ie

Cork City took the points in Athlone on Saturday night as a Shane Duggan goal proved the only difference between the sides despite a plethora of wasted chances from the visitors and a red card for Athlone’s Brian McCarthy.

Duggan was the key man for Cork in an opening half that offered little in the way of enterprising football. Duggan gave a warning to the Athlone defence in the 25th minute when his free kick was tipped onto the post and away for a corner by ‘keeper Michael Schlingermann.

Having taken a moment to get needlessly booked for a block on Kieran Moloney, Duggan then returned to the danger area. Picking the ball up on the edge of the box he wriggled his way towards goal before sliding the ball under Schlingermann and into the Athlone net.

It was a lead that Cork took into half time and was well deserved given that it was they who created the bulk of the chances. Davin O’Neill volleyed high over the bar as early as the fourth minute after an excellent cross-field ball from Graham Barrett. Ian Turner should have done better than shoot weakly at Schlingermann in the 32nd minute when set free by a clever Graham Cummins back-heel.

It was a half that Cork dominated, playing some nice passing football in rare bursts, but all too often they let themselves down with badly misplaced passes. The visitors broke quickly and created space on the flanks but Tommy Dunne will surely be concerned that this was not translated into pressure on the Athlone goal.

The second half began with more wasted chances from Cork as Cambridge and then O’Neill failed to convert in the opening minutes. In the 52nd minute Brian McCarthy almost showed the Cork boys how to do it, directing a corner towards his own goal and he was only saved from deep embarrassment by a superb Schlingermann save.

Then, with an hour played, Athlone’s task became monumental. McCarthy checked the progress of O’Neill as he drove towards the box and both players hit the turf; O’Neill hurt, the already booked McCarthy in a desperate attempt to hide from referee Jim McKell. The ruse failed and McCarthy departed for an early bath.

There followed a period of intense pressure from Cork. Chances fell to Cummins, whose 20 yard shot was athletically turned over by Schlingermann, and Gareth Cambridge, who was once again brilliantly denied by the Athlone ‘keeper. The Cork profligacy just wouldn’t end and a succession of half chances were wasted.

With twenty minutes remaining the heavens opened and as a biblical deluge descended the home side finally found some steam. Austin Skelly, Robbie Farrell and Niall Scullion all came on and a new spirit arose.

Declan O’Brien forced two excellent saves from McNulty in the Cork goal as the tide turned. A Scullion shot was spilled wide by McNulty and it seemed as if the impossible might happen. But as the final whistle approached it was Cork who picked up the pace. Several more chances arrived at Cork feet but a combination of poor shooting and the able Schlingermann kept the dying moments scoreless.

Welcome !

Hey everyone,
My own name is John O' Shea and if you don't know me already I am a massive supporter of Cork City Football Club. If you are unfamiler with the club  we have gone through so many trials and tribulations over the last few years , but now the fans are at the helm with the supporters running the club under FORAS( Friends of the Rebel Army society)  . This season has been a building season more or less for City, but hopefully this season will do us good as we hope to move onwards and upwards  back to the highs of a few short years ago.
The ultimate aim of this blog is to give you an insight into the life of a Cork City FC fan and I will also try to provide all the latest CCFC news to you.
So that's about it for now, check out this blog again shortly as I will be writing about my day in Athlone yesterday , where City recorded a 1-0 against the midlanders.
